Branding Design Wisdom for your Website Buttons

When branding design experts design call-to-action buttons for websites, they keep these principles in mind:

  • Keep it in the family. A daisy-shaped button would certainly attract some attention on a dark horror website, but it won’t be the right kind of attention. Buttons should play to the psychology of your visitors. If your call-to-action buttons are too far removed from the theme, they will not spur people to click. Don’t forget that if you’re utilising a light source and shadowing in your website design, your button should also “reflect” this effect.
  • Bright is best. Vibrant colours attract the eye, and they’ll attract plenty of attention to your website’s buttons. If your website design is largely made up of pastel hues and muted tones, a hot pink button might not be the best choice…so let’s just say that buttons should be the most brightly coloured elements on your webpages.


  • Contrast is crucial. If your background is light green and your buttons are medium green, they will blend into that background and will not spur visitors to click. People will skim right past, with barely a thought about what they’ve just seen. Empty space, or padding, surrounding a button can add to contrast’s effect.
  • Size matters. Let’s clarify. Your call-to-action buttons should be tremendously visible, but should not be the focal point of any webpage. Make them large enough so that they can’t be missed, but tasteful enough that they’re not obnoxious.
  • Apply website design concepts. Play with borders, shading, patterns, shapes, and gradients to demonstrate your design savvy and attention to detail. An attractive, well-designed button really does beg to be pushed.
  • Point to the button with website design. Choose your buttons’ immediate surroundings wisely, keeping in mind the attraction and the direction of sight. Arrows and directional geography and lines will guide the eye toward your button, while familiar icons like credit card logos will work to establish trust and make clicking emotionally easier.
  • Choose words wisely. When deciding how to title your button, avoid language like “Buy Now.” Instead, use words like “Try” or “Sample.” Name a specific benefit or talk about solving a problem that your visitors regularly experience. The text on a button acts as an abbreviated call-to-action, and should be as psychologically powerful as any other call-to-action. The words on your button should be few, but powerful, and indicative of how you will help anyone who clicks.
